Among the beauties of the Lazio region I want to tell you about Lago del Turano: a paradise to discover. Artificial lake in the province of Rieti near Rome, immersed in the natural reserve of Monte Navegna and Monte Cervia. It is an artificial lake built in 1939 with the construction of the Turano Dam in order to produce hydroelectric energy and to prevent flooding of the river from flooding the Rieti Plain. Surrounded by small villages that offer breathtaking views is definitely one of the destinations in the Lazio region not to be missed. Let’s discover together the Lake of Turano: a paradise to discover.
HOW TO GET TO THE LAKE FROM ROME
Lake Turano is located in the province of Rieti in the Lazio region and can be reached both by car and public transport. It is about 80 km from Rome, 30 km from Rieti, 75 km from Aquila and 60 km from Terni.
By car: you can choose two alternative routes, through the freeway A24 Roma l’Aquila (toll 6,2€) or through the A1 to Fiano Romano (toll 1,5€) and then the via Salaria. By train: journey from Rome to Carsoli (50 km) or from Roma Termini a train leaves every 4 hours taking 1 hour and 10 minutes (between 5€ and 11€). * Once you arrive at Carsoli station a few meters away there is the bus stop (blue color of Cotral). Bus, journey from Carsoli to Lake Turano (15 km), Ascrea, Paganico, Castel di Tora or Colle di Tora. The journey from Carsoli to Castel di Tora is about 30 minutes. The bus stops at Paganico Sabino, Ascrea, Castel di Tora and Colle di Tora.
A DAY ON THE LAKE: WHAT TO DO
– Visit the surrounding villages – Visit the waterfalls – Stop for a lakefront Pic-Nic – Rent a Kayak
As for the villages to visit along the lake among my favorites there are definitely Castel di Tora and Colle di Tora. As for the first one, being on a hill, it offers breathtaking views and there are also many small restaurants along its narrow streets. Visiting the second village, on the other hand, there is the possibility to take a walk along a path overlooking the lake that goes around the entire small village, and also, the silence that you feel is really enchanting.
The Cascate delle Vallocchie are small waterfalls reachable thanks to a pleasant walk through the mountains. Accessible path to all of the duration of 20 minutes leads directly under the waterfall. The thing that struck me the most in addition to the beautiful green landscape was the change of temperature as I approached the watercourse.
If you decide to make a Pic-Nic lakefront the options are multiple. There are many places to stop … So just bring the necessary equipment and there it is, you can organize a lunch with a beautiful view and why not … maybe even take a dip !
If you want to do an activity that also includes a bit of adventure there are several places where you can rent canoes, kayaks or small boats. For example L’angoletto has these services and also a restaurant overlooking the lake.
These are the activities that I decided to do during my one-day visit but there are many other things to do and see so I invite you to visit the web page www.turano.it I came at the end of this article where I tell you about some activities that you can do when you go to visit the Turano lake.
